Wuchak on Savage

6/10 · May 13, 2026

The central questions—is the sensitive information accurate? What led to the sudden death of someone vital to the investigation? And will journalist Paul Savage broadcast the rumor, potentially derailing a Supreme Court nominee’s career and his marriage?—are what propel this talky drama/subtle thriller. Martin Landau portrays the reporter, with Barbara Bain as his producer; they were married in real life and had previously collaborated on Mission Impossible and would later work together on Space: 1999. Their marriage ultimately ended in 1993. This project was initially conceived as a pilot episode for a potential television series but didn’t secure funding, resulting in its release as a standalone film that is notably dialogue-heavy. It features several noteworthy elements beyond the two leads. Michele Carey has a substantial and engaging part, and she's visually striking. She was considered one of the most charming actresses working during the late 1960s and early 1970s, as evidenced by her roles in films like John Wayne’s “El Dorado” and Elvis’ “Live a Little, Love a Little,” along with Westerns “Dirty Dingus Magee” and the lesser-known “The Animals,” also known as “Five Savage Men.” Secondly, this was Spielberg's third and final television movie before transitioning to feature films. He reportedly wasn't enthusiastic about directing it but was essentially obligated by an executive at Universal. Thirdly, Will Geer appears in a role as an older, affluent man who leverages his influence through manipulation and blackmail. While he’s perhaps most recognized for playing Grandpa Walton, he convincingly portrays a powerful figure hosting lavish parties at his estate. Finally, there's a recurring element involving the main character—the newscaster consistently arrives at the studio just before airtime—that frames both the movie (and what would have been the series). The film’s runtime is 1 hour and 13 minutes; it was filmed from December 1971 to January 1972 in Los Angeles and at Universal Studios. GRADE: C+/B-
