This wartime drama benefits from a notably talented group of actors as it follows Prudence (Joan Fontaine), a privileged young woman who decides to enlist in the Women’s Auxiliary Army Force, which doesn’t sit well with her father, played by Henry Stephenson. Shortly after beginning her service, she's arranged on a date with Briggs (Tyrone Power), and quickly finds herself attracted to him. However, he is hiding something that threatens to disrupt their lives. Fontaine and Power share believable chemistry and both perform admirably; although the young woman’s character occasionally indulges in lengthy speeches, it doesn’t detract significantly from what becomes an entertaining wartime romance with a touch of danger reflecting the experiences of people living in London during the blitz. Supported by Thomas Mitchell, Nigel Bruce, and Melville Cooper along with others, Anatole Litvak has created a visually appealing film that is certainly worth seeing.
