This Italian/Filipino action film, WARBUS, will likely be weighed against STRIPES because it takes inspiration from that movie’s comedic style. Comedy doesn't always translate well across cultures, so the filmmakers opted to create two films featuring soldiers preparing a bus for a mission, and they played things completely straight. While WAR BUS COMMANDO is known for including Mark Gregory, who starred in 1990: THE BRONX WARRIORS, that film is truly awful—essentially the same as DAYS OF HELL but with an even smaller budget and less passion behind the camera. However, don't be misled by any of that. WARBUS isn’t related to Gregory’s movie and it’s much better. Daniel Stephen, Rom Kristoff, and Urs Althaus form a strong action team, showing good rapport as they fight communist forces. The script is surprisingly well-written, and the film includes several impressive action scenes with a high number of casualties and spectacular slow-motion explosions. One scene stands out involving “deceased” American soldiers who are rigged with explosives. How the protagonists handle this situation is puzzling, but it’s still entertaining to watch.
