The Crab with the Golden Claws is a stop motion animated feature from Belgium, released in 1947 and produced by Wilfried Bouchery for Films Claude Misonne. It’s based on Hergé's comic book Le Crabe Aux Pinces D'Or, which initially appeared as a serial comic strip in 1941. This film marked the first adaptation of a Tintin story into a movie, and it closely adheres to the original comic book storyline, as Hergé had requested. It also holds the distinction of being Belgium’s very first animated feature film. A private screening took place in Brussels at the ABC Cinema on January 11, 1947, for a select group of invited guests. This wasn't a public showing, so it shouldn't be considered the movie's official release; instead, it was more like an ongoing production preview [1]. The film’s initial public screening occurred on December 21, 1947, at the ABC Cinema located on Place Sainctelette in Brussels. Though scheduled to continue showing until January 11, 1948, the producer, Wilfried Bouchery, faced bankruptcy the following day, resulting in the film and all associated equipment being seized. Bouchery subsequently fled to Argentina and continued attempting to market the movie through other channels for several months during the summer of 1948, but he was unable to secure a distributor. Following that, the film disappeared from view until it resurfaced in Brussels during the 1980s at the Musée du Cinéma. The original 35mm film underwent restoration by the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique. A restored version was shown on July 22, 2005, at Bozar – an arts center in Brussels – as part of “Le Marathon du Cinéma” during the Tintin Festival. On May 14, 2008, a PAL DVD edition of the film was released in France by Fox Pathé Europa. [1] According to Philppe Goddin’s book, Hergé refused to extend the producer's contract a month before the movie's public release until he had seen the finished product and assessed its quality and effectiveness. Essentially, in November 1947, the film hadn't yet been approved by Hergé, so January 1947 cannot be considered its date of birth.
