This would be an excellent starting point for someone unfamiliar with opera; there’s hardly a better option than this shortened presentation of Bizet's "Carmen." The narrative follows a nameless woman (Geraldine Farrar) who aids her associates in illicit activities by captivating the previously unblemished “Don José” (Wallace Reid), allowing them to keep operating. Consequently, the captain becomes entangled in her web and, after killing his own brother to assist her, finds himself in serious trouble. Although many of the specifics are missing, the fundamental plot remains intact, and Farrar’s and Reid's performances are commendable. The production design is also noteworthy; it avoids the rigid feel common in numerous early adaptations from stage to screen, particularly during sequences involving the bullfighter, and naturally benefits from the magnificent score. Subtitles are used sparingly – most of the story unfolds through facial expressions and music, which generally proves effective. It can be a bit awkward at times, and large gatherings occasionally become difficult to follow, but a humorous catfight is present, along with enough of the original, rather intense storyline to make it worthwhile viewing.
