Runme Shaw launched a series of “wuxia” films, and this one features Cheng Pei-pei, preceding Jimmy Wang Yu's significant contribution to the genre with THE CHINESE BOXER in 1970. THE JADE RAKSHA is fortunate to have come out during that brief window—roughly four or five years—when Shaw Brothers combined impressive outdoor settings with their familiar studio sets, creating a distinctive feel. The movie contains pretty much everything you could want: a revenge story, dramatic moments, action sequences, violence, romance, unexpected turns in the plot, and more. While the sword fighting isn’t the strongest aspect, other elements common to wuxia films—like running across water or battling on bamboo stalks—that later inspired CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, are certainly present, which is understandable considering who's starring and what the film is called. Plus, there’s plenty of blood. I was also quite taken aback to discover that portions of THE BIG COUNTRY’s musical score were used in this one; Jerome Moross would likely be pleased by that.
