While Toshirô Mifune ("Gen. Makabe") receives prominent placement in the credits and occupies a significant portion of the screen time, this story fundamentally revolves around the experiences of two farmers: "Matakichi" (Kamatari Fujiwara) and "Tahei" (Minori Chiaki). These resourceful individuals become aware of a substantial amount of gold concealed after their land is taken over by neighbors. They embark on a journey to locate it, during which they unexpectedly encounter the general in an isolated mountain setting. The location isn't truly a fortress—it’s more like a large structure situated on a hillside—but they realize that it contains something far more valuable than gold: the Princess "Yuki" (Misa Uehara), who is being pursued by her adversaries with even greater intensity than the treasure itself. Their clumsy nature and inquisitiveness, combined with their desire for wealth and an instinct for self-preservation, prompt them to join forces with the fleeing couple, all of whom attempt to transport the princess and the gold to a neighboring kingdom where they can find refuge. The resulting events unfold as a series of amusing and dangerous escapades that provide opportunities for each character to shine. Mifune is well-suited to his role as the steadfast, honorable—and quite formidable—general; the Princess displays considerable strength herself, and throughout the narrative, we are shown an interesting examination of the corruption, deceit, and bravery inherent in wartime—it highlights both the admirable qualities and the darker aspects of human nature. The film’s conclusion evokes a sense reminiscent of Laurel and Hardy, eliciting smiles and leaving me with a feeling of genuine enjoyment for this well-structured adventure.
