It’s disappointing that this film marked Mary Pickford's final appearance. The movie feels like a fairly standard melodrama where she doesn't have many opportunities to truly stand out. "Mary," born into privilege, finds herself in love with her father’s employee, Leslie Howard ("John"). Her parents—her father (C. Aubrey Smith) and mother (Blanche Friderici)—strongly disapprove of the match, and he is dismissed from his job as a result. Determined to be together, they run away, relocate to California, and build a successful life. They start as an affectionate couple with a small child, but over time, their wealth and his desire for advancement begin to strain their perfect existence as he begins to aspire to higher office. The initial portion of the film, depicting their efforts to remain united and establish themselves, is enjoyable and occasionally amusing; however, the rest feels rushed, jumping ahead by years and leaving the characters underdeveloped to wrap up the narrative within 90 minutes. Nevertheless, it's clear why both lead actors possessed undeniable star power!
