Brent Marchant on Witchy Ways

8/10 · Sep 25, 2024

Many people associate witchcraft and the supernatural with frightening or negative things. Those who practice these beliefs often feel frustrated by how others perceive their actions, especially when those practices are intended to be helpful, particularly in terms of self-discovery and achieving goals. This is true for romance as well, no matter a person’s background or preferences. That's the basic idea behind writer-director Jane Clark’s newest film, which follows Eve (Diora Baird), a successful but lonely businesswoman who travels to a remote vacation home in California’s Topanga Canyon, though her purpose and what she will find there remain largely unclear, even to herself. The trip is meant as a way of honoring her recently deceased mother, who considered the place a significant refuge for reasons that aren't fully explained—a sort of mysterious haven. Once there, the protagonist, longing for love, begins experiencing strange occurrences, some mystical in nature, others playful, and still others deeply affecting and romantic. A relationship quickly develops between the cautious, reclusive main character and her neighbor, Danni (Marem Hassler), who owns the property and openly identifies as a Wiccan spiritualist. Their connection, which seems unlikely at first, turns out to be exactly what they both need. However, as this romance grows, each woman must confront issues from their pasts that they need to resolve in order to move forward, challenges that are ultimately eased by a bit of magic and plenty of kindness and understanding. This unusual love story is a pleasant surprise, blending seemingly unrelated elements into a charming, revealing, and often funny narrative. Besides portraying a heartfelt same-sex romance, the film offers viewers an honest, straightforward, and genuinely insightful look at philosophical and spiritual ideas that are frequently misrepresented by inaccurate and hurtful assumptions. While the movie takes some time to get going and occasionally feels overly conversational, it ultimately proves worthwhile, becoming increasingly compelling as it progresses, without ever feeling sentimental or resembling a typical, excessively sweet production from the Hallmark Channel. “Witchy Ways” is a truly captivating work of LGBTQ+ cinema that effectively uses its magic, potentially enchanting audiences.
