The film carries a somewhat odd environmental theme, set against the backdrop of a dispute between oil workers and local Oklahoman farmers, many of whom are Native American. Setting aside the awkward opening song performed by "Pinky" (Chill Wills), who also provides the upbeat narration, we meet "Cherokee" (Susan Hayward), seeking financial restitution after her father dies due to an accident involving an oil derrick belonging to "Tanner" (Lloyd Gough). He refuses her request initially, but when she acquires some oil leases that are beyond her means to develop, he agrees to loan her the money, displaying a degree of fairness mixed with self-interest. The rest of the story unfolds in a familiar manner, and while Hayward delivers an adequate performance as a woman struggling with the environmental impact of their actions alongside her romantic choices between her intended husband "Brad" (Robert Preston) and the conscientious local man "Jim" (Pedro Armendáriz), the other actors seem to be simply going through the motions. The visual effects are reasonably good later in the film, and there's a sense that even back in 1949 people were considering the need to find harmony between advancement and the natural world. It’s acceptable entertainment.
