While there are moments where the pace lags, I did find 'Almost Angels' to be enjoyable overall. It’s a gentle story, though it seems it could have been developed further and made more impressive—it shares similarities with Disney’s 1955 film, 'The Littlest Outlaw' in that sense. The child performers aren’t particularly remarkable, but they are adequate for their parts. Peter Weck stands out as the strongest performer, lending a likable and warm presence to the character of Max Heller. The cast is fairly limited in number. The storyline isn’t flawless; it begins focusing on one central figure and then shifts to another by the conclusion—it almost feels like the filmmakers were unsure which narrative they wanted to emphasize most. As suggested early on, I would have preferred a more realistic and intense tone so that we could feel as though we experienced a real progression with Tony (Vincent Winter) and Peter (Sean Scully). Despite these issues, the film ultimately leaves one feeling good.
