A Colorado town is experiencing disturbing incidents involving animal attacks—possibly by a pack of dogs or another creature—that seem to happen exclusively during full moons. The story follows a local rock band’s introspective vocalist, Jamie Newcomb, who joins forces with some college students to figure out what's going on. "Lone Wolf," released in 1988 and made for video, uses relatively unknown performers and has an odd mix of earnestness and over-the-top acting, but it manages to be enjoyable as a lighthearted horror film resembling a fun slasher, maybe with a wolf creature involved. It seems like the actors were having a good time making it. I'd prefer this movie any day compared to "Silver Bullet," and it’s better than “Night Shadow,” which came out around the same time. A peculiar thing is that most of the students appear to be in their thirties. While Colleen looks like she could plausibly be 18 or 21, Julie, along with Deirdre and Eddie particularly, seem older. The filmmakers intentionally left the school's identity vague because of this, simply referring to it as “Fairview School.” It’s meant to be a community college, but all the scenes set at the school were clearly filmed at a high school (as noted below). They had to film where they could afford to, I suppose. The soundtrack includes four songs by the hair metal band Tyxe—"Raised On Rock & Roll," "Misunderstood," “Let It Rock,” and “Rock You All Night”—all written by Greg Leslie. These tracks come from their 1988 demo, but there's not much else available about the group. Their music is similar to Dokken, Ratt, and Warrant. The film’s length is 1 hour and 37 minutes, and it was filmed in the Denver area, including Adams City High School and Jefferson County. GRADE: B-
