It’s easy to imagine a different title—something like "The Final Solution"—because it feels as if the writer was primarily trying to get rid of a character he’d lost interest in. “Holmes” (played by Eille Norwood) and “Watson” (Hubert Willis) are brought in by "Insp. Taylor" (Tom Beaumont) to deal with the villainous "Prof. Moriarty" (Percy Standing). The police have caught most of Moriarty's associates, but he’s still out there, and Holmes believes he is being hunted for a decisive confrontation. It seems like everything will culminate near Cheddar Gorge, but it remains to be seen who will win this intellectual struggle that may turn violent. The initial portion follows a familiar formula, yet as the story moves toward its conclusion, it unexpectedly shifts towards comedy rather than suspense and then feels hurried; the title cards can’t quite manage to keep up with what seems like vital dialogue. The outdoor shots are adequate, and it's always enjoyable to see steam trains from the 1920s, but there isn't enough substance to support the narrative. While Norwood continues to define the image of Sir Arthur’s iconic detective for future audiences, his performance here feels rather perfunctory.
