John Chard on Don't Wait, Django... Shoot!

5/10 · Jan 9, 2017

This inexpensive film reminiscent of Django doesn’t quite manage to be captivating. Django (Ivan Rassimov) goes back to his family's place and discovers that bandits have stolen from and killed his father. Disregarding the warnings and concerns of his sister Mary—who is portrayed by Rassimov's actual sister, Rada—he heads into town seeking retribution. However, this marks only the start of what unfolds. While there’s some enjoyment to be had for dedicated enthusiasts of Spaghetti Westerns, it’s important to keep expectations modest. The film includes familiar elements like gunfights, tense confrontations, and dramatic posing, along with a somber tone and impressive music (by Felice Di Stefano). Unfortunately, the movie's construction is flawed. Directed by Edoardo Mulargia and penned by Vincenzo Musolino, the filmmakers took a risk by resolving the revenge storyline fairly early on. The narrative then introduces numerous characters—each connected to the hunt for the money stolen when Django’s father was murdered. The entire film feels like an assembly of scenes that don't connect in a logical or cohesive way. It doesn’t help that this version of Django is uninteresting; it’s actually his partner, Barrica (played by Ignazio Spalla), who provides more entertainment and amusement. The limited budget becomes noticeable at times (you might get a sense of having seen something like it before), and illogical moments and silliness are frequent. The story and structure are unnecessarily complicated, and the film is barely rescued by the action sequences and some memorable personalities. Ultimately, this one’s best suited for committed Spaghetti Western fans. 5/10
