The film centers on Henry Hull’s character, Gen. McCready, who is trying to devise novel strategies for striking against Nazi airfields and aiding in preparations for D-Day, but seems stuck. A squadron commander named "Brick" (John Rodney) does have some proposals, which require promoting “Ed” (Edmond O'Brien) into a position that many believe he isn’t ready for. This character is portrayed as someone who disregards regulations and acts as if they don’t apply to him. The story explores whether he can reform his behavior and lead his squadron during this vital period of the war. Viewers will see arguments, competition, introspection, displays of aggression, and a number of black cats—though ultimately it feels like an uplifting film intended for home audiences, lacking real danger despite its thin storyline. While there's some thrilling aerial footage to maintain momentum, the final fifteen minutes are enough to justify experiencing this otherwise slow-paced wartime story. It’s odd that women are entirely absent from the narrative, which contributes to a very male atmosphere.
