Pete Smith provides a wry commentary for this cheerfully scored comedy, which highlights what bothers us about people attending movies. The film begins with two individuals arriving late and struggling to find seating arrangements. One or both are wearing an oversized hat and seem incapable of being quiet, regardless of the situation. Then comes another person—rather substantial in size—who simply pushes into an available seat in the middle of a row and proceeds to disrobe and take up considerable space, putting those nearby at risk within a twenty-foot area. Discovering gum stuck beneath a seat is another familiar annoyance; similarly depicted are those who repeatedly nudge the back of your chair, as well as people whose feet block the aisle and those who noisily consume snacks—a sound comparable to an entire family opening Christmas presents simultaneously! It’s tempting to consider whether these actions warrant imprisonment or some other form of fitting retribution. Perhaps restraints? Sharp objects? Suffocation? Stomping? I really enjoyed this, even though it does feel a little repetitive; it captures much of the inconsiderate behavior displayed by people in cinemas who seem to have forgotten they aren't at home—or who simply don’t care. Fortunately, this was created before smartphones became prevalent, because Mr. Smith might have felt inclined to use a machine gun on those! I probably would too.
