The film begins with an assertion that seems unbelievable—but surprisingly, it works. What follows is a believable account from the director himself regarding the motivations behind his career. He details in six sections, though they feel somewhat artificial, outlining the forces that drove his creative work, producing an output unlikely to be replicated. Beginning in the late 1920s, we are taken through a progression of his various approaches, influences, and methods—a veritable paradise for those who enjoy name-dropping. Frequent references to Cary (Carey, naturally), Grace, Tippi, Kim, Jimmy—even "Hank" (Fonda)—add an element of closeness as he reveals and exposes some of the secrets behind his directing, and their performances as well. It does run long; I found myself questioning how it could possibly sustain itself for two hours. However, the narration maintains a warm and approachable tone. There's a playful quality to his delivery, and the use of phrases like "don’t you think?" or “wouldn’t you?” created a sense of connection. No other voices are included; instead, an extensive archive is utilized, effectively showcasing the breadth of stories, talent, and length of this director’s career before he passed away at what could be considered a respectable age in 1980. If you appreciate film, or “Hitch,” or both, then I recommend seeing it. I'm not convinced that experiencing it in a movie theater is essential, and it might actually be more suitable as a two-part documentary on television. It’s undoubtedly quite absorbing.
