John Chard on Ride Beyond Vengeance

1/10 · Aug 26, 2017

I understand why this movie might appeal to some viewers; its bleakness and rough qualities could be attractive. However, the poor construction and acting really hold it back! It’s a textbook illustration of the problems American Westerns were facing at that point in film history. Michael Rennie and Bill Bixby seem entirely wrong for their roles, Claude Akins' performance is wildly exaggerated (which is unusual for him), and Bernard McEveety's direction demonstrates why he was better suited to television. Everything feels artificial; the sets inside important buildings resemble Wild West-themed eateries, while the outdoor scenes are obviously what they are—sets! (probably constructed from something as rigid as Chuck Connors’ acting). The script is weak, which results in a narrative that never feels genuine or emotionally resonant. Intended to be significant moments fall flat and the action sequences are unintentionally comical. There's nothing special or overlooked about this one; it's simply poorly made and frustrating rather than enjoyable. 1/10
