While it’s difficult to simply label this as propaganda, the encouragement for potential naval recruits is obvious. It's surprisingly approachable, detailing the challenges faced by a group of new enlistees transitioning from civilian life to military routines. Robert Lowery ("Johnny") and William Henry ("Randall") find themselves competing for Jean Parker's affections ("Ellen"), raising questions about whether their dedication to their nation will hold firm... This is an uncomplicated, cheerful, low-budget film that acknowledges the resentment surrounding conscription, but primarily functioned as a morale booster in 1944. Although sentimental, it remains viewable even decades later.
