During one sequence in this movie, "Marie" (played by Leonor Aubert) finds herself in a carriage, visibly frightened, alongside the central character within this thriller reminiscent of Jekyll and Hyde. She's desperately trying to communicate with him—shouting, begging, urging him not to harm her, as he changes into something like a dangerous cat. When she asks him to "say something to me," an unexpected thing happened: nearly everyone in the audience – around fifty people – all at once responded with “miaow.” It was truly remarkable how well-timed and coordinated that moment of comedy was, exceeding anything happening within the film itself, which felt like a rather dull murder story. Carl Esmond portrays "Regnier," a writer who learns his book is facing censorship. After the archivist transporting documents to the censor turns up dead—attacked—he becomes a suspect, and the plot moves forward with what feels like an extremely gentle mystery that’s missing almost everything – except, maybe, a certain captivating atmosphere of late 19th-century Paris. The quality of the writing, directing, and acting is perfectly acceptable, but the film doesn't manage to create any real feeling of danger or excitement; at times it feels more like a dimly lit love story with a predictable surprise ending.
