The film begins with a bothersome cuckoo clock, leading us to a town announcer who delivers introductions of characters from made-up stories in a very flat tone. We meet individuals like "Fu Manchu," "Frankenstein," and "Dr. Jekyll"—though they aren't frightening at all, instead participating in something resembling the “Sugar Plum Fairy’s” dance. This sets the stage for an enjoyable and quite original journey through various books, which provides a reason for the animators to draw inspiration from the titles and for the musicians to create imaginative music as well. I particularly enjoyed "Whistler's Mother," "Bulldog Drummin," and it appears Charles Laughton is featured on the cover of “Mutiny on the Bounty.” Are castles involved? Not really, but that doesn’t seem important since snake charmers and even Henry VIII make appearances. Who would have thought a little boy actually blew!?
