During 1989 and 1990, Belgium experienced an extended period of sightings of unexplained aerial phenomena, which became known as "the Belgian UFO wave." Shortly after this began, journalist Marc Vaerenbergh (played by Dominique Rongvaux) started a detailed investigation into the events, interviewing numerous witnesses from both civilian and military backgrounds. He continued to pursue the story until his sudden and unexplained disappearance—a case that was never officially resolved. Three decades later, two amateur investigators – including Marc’s godson who uses drugs (Karim Barras) and an actress hoping to become a journalist (Karen De Paduwa)—decide to revisit the situation in order to discover what truly occurred. The outcome is a bizarre, chaotic, psychedelic story involving interactions with a cult focused on cloning and alien hybrids, covert military activities, Marc’s former girlfriend who is also out of it, the reporter's old colleagues, and various other eccentric individuals. The film combines modern video footage, dreamlike scenes, and simulated archival/found footage reels, all beautifully filmed in bright colors and skillfully edited to keep the story moving, hold audience attention, and create suspense about what will happen next. The storytelling incorporates a significant amount of unconventional humor, often visual and seemingly random, but which usually connects back to the central plot. Altogether, these features combine to make for a hilarious and entertaining movie that recalls other sci-fi/drug-influenced cult classics like “Liquid Sky” (1982), offering enjoyment from its unusual beginning to its even more unusual conclusion. My one reservation is that the film occasionally becomes overly indulgent in its weird and macabre antics as it progresses, but considering all of what writer-director Jérôme Vandewattyne achieves, this is a relatively small flaw overall. “The Belgian Wave” is a movie that sticks with you, particularly when experienced with appropriate "assistance" (wink) on a large screen with good sound. As the Grateful Dead once said, after seeing this one, you’ll probably leave the theater and think to yourself, “What a long, strange trip it's been.”
