John Chard on Mother's Day

8/10 · Oct 16, 2014

I'm really pleased with what my boys accomplished; they didn’t forget about their mom. This is a terrific reimagining of Troma’s low-budget film from the eighties. The plot centers on three brothers who committed a bank robbery and are now trying to evade capture, intending to seek refuge in the house where they grew up. However, another couple and some visitors are already living there, so the brothers hold them hostage, and things quickly escalate into brutality—particularly when their unstable mother shows up. The movie is extremely graphic and intense as director Darren Lynn Bousman brings the original story to a contemporary setting. With scenes of torment and degradation, it’s definitely not something you'd want to watch on a casual date, but the filmmakers do a good job combining the sleazy aspects of the initial film with current anxieties about home invasions. The storyline isn't flawless; some developments demand considerable suspension of disbelief, and things get pretty far-fetched, but Rebecca De Mornay is fantastic as the deranged mother, so those shortcomings are easy to overlook. It gets an 8/10 from me.
