Reno on Mother's Day

6/10 · Aug 4, 2016

Hearing about Garry Marshall’s recent passing prompted me to view this movie sooner than I otherwise would have. He was a talented director, unusual for his focus on female-centered stories and films with large casts. I've always enjoyed his work, including movies like 'Overboard', 'Valentine's Day', 'Pretty Woman', and 'Frankie and Johnny,' among others. His films aren’t universally appealing, but they resonate with a specific audience—an audience that includes me. This marks the conclusion of what is being called the Special Day trilogy. I really liked 'Valentine's Day', but 'New Year's Eve' didn't work out well at all, and this film sits between those two. The plot was passable, though nothing particularly grabbed my attention. What kept me engaged were the actors; their presence and performances made it worthwhile to watch. One of my initial questions was about what Jason Sudeikis was doing on the 'Mother’s Day' poster. The narrative begins a week or so before Mother's Day, centering around different mothers who are connected in various ways. The film explores being a mother and the duties that come with it. I had hoped for something more emotionally impactful or with a stronger message, but ultimately it felt like an average movie. It’s certainly an enjoyable way to spend some time, but it missed opportunities to be truly exceptional. Some viewers may find it appealing, while others probably won't. Despite what your final rating might be, it's generally a pleasant film. 6/10
