Reno on Mothers and Daughters

6/10 · Dec 4, 2016

The movie centers on women’s experiences and challenges. It felt reminiscent of the movie 'Fathers & Daughters', but it turned out to be something different, with storytelling that had several levels. It explores the connections between mothers and daughters, along with other aspects of their lives. This is the first feature film from directors who usually work in television. The story wasn't adapted from a book; instead, it’s an original screenplay. What didn’t quite work was the confusing way the story unfolded, and there were just too many characters crammed together. Even the editing felt shaky, although the actors did a commendable job. It’s a film that highlights women's issues, as suggested by its title. It requires patience to get into, but it ultimately proves worthwhile. The movie deals with subjects like pregnancy and other difficulties in life, all from a female point of view. So, while it isn't a romance at its core, it develops into one by the conclusion. Men are present in the story, but they aren’t particularly significant, which explains why there weren't any well-known male actors involved. There isn't much wrong with the film itself, except that it doesn't quite fit into either the theatrical or television movie category; it exists somewhere in between. Some viewers will likely appreciate the effort put into it, but many others probably won’t, and especially not professional film critics. I think you’ll be able to decide if this is something you want to see. _6/10_
