It’s genuinely difficult to assign a numerical rating to this movie; trying to do so feels inadequate. I feel pulled toward giving it both a top score and a middling one, and neither would truly capture its essence, so I'm settling somewhere in between. Aronofsky has created some disturbing films before, but this one reaches an entirely different plane of intensity. If you recall the intensely chaotic ending of _Requiem for a Dream_, imagine that amplified fifty times over – that’s just scratching the surface of what awaits in _mother!_ I'm hesitant to discuss the plot or the film’s conclusion too much, as very little about it is widely known. Experiencing this movie with no prior knowledge will maximize its impact. I’ll only say that the poster and promotional materials, which evoke _Rosemary’s Baby_, are misleading; there's virtually no connection to that film, though Polanski’s horror style clearly influenced Aronofsky here. I do want to highlight three aspects of the film that particularly impressed me. First, the sound design was extraordinary. There isn't a traditional musical score – I'm not entirely sure what Jóhann Jóhansson contributed – but the soundscape is unsettling and incredibly memorable. Second, the production design is exceptional; the house in the movie feels like a central character itself, and it undergoes significant changes throughout. The art direction has stayed with me all day. Third, Jennifer Lawrence delivers a deeply affecting performance, fully committing to Aronofsky’s vision, but Michelle Pfeiffer's portrayal truly resonated with me. Although she appears primarily in the first sixty percent of the film, she makes a lasting impression. Her character is vital to the story and she brought an incredible sense of enigma and weight to everything that followed her departure. I plan to rewatch it soon and hopefully have more considered thoughts. It’s hard to offer much analysis right now given how few people have seen the film, but trust me, there's a great deal to unpack with _mother!_
