This film feels a lot like "Fisherman’s Friends," centering on “Cal” (Jonno Davies) who returns home to his English West Country village after three years away. He'd achieved success as a singer-songwriter before disappearing, and his reappearance isn’t exactly celebrated by everyone. Things get even more complicated when he finds that his dad (Martin Clunes) and brother “Jake” (James Buckley) are struggling to keep their family pub afloat—it’s in such bad shape they can barely afford beer—and the smug “Pritchard” (Luke Treadaway) is eager to buy it cheaply and add it to his chain of manufactured, Tudor-style pubs. "Cal" believes that brewing their own beer is the answer, so he teams up with his niece “Romy” (Lana Moorcroft) to revive his grandfather's expertise in real ale production and also to win back his former girlfriend “Abi” (Gabriella Wilde), who’s now involved with someone else. The story unfolds with some gentle teasing of local brewing customs, offering fairly straightforward entertainment for ninety minutes. While the jokes are often obvious and you can guess what’s going to happen, Mark Addy brings a pleasant warmth as a character who calls to mind Stanley Holloway's "Valentine" from “The Titfield Thunderbolt” (1953), and Moorcroft’s performance also elicits some smiles. It's the kind of easygoing movie that British filmmakers do well; if you want something undemanding, a glimpse into rural life with attractive scenery, and a very unusual version of "D.I.S.C.O.,"—all while dealing with someone adding a huge amount of sugar to a beer barrel—you probably won't be let down.
