The reliance on phone calls to build tension can feel tired in movies, but this brief film utilizes a string of conversations exceptionally well. “Elena” (Marta Nieto) is helping her mother unpack groceries when she receives a call. It’s from her young son, who's vacationing in France with his father and now unexpectedly stranded on the beach. As she speaks to him, trying to soothe his worries, her mother simultaneously works another phone, attempting to locate the father, contacting authorities, and assisting in keeping the boy composed while a growing sense of urgency escalates toward near panic. The entire story unfolds within a spacious apartment where both women are often visible together, displaying contrasting reactions. Ultimately, there’s a pair of strong performances on display, and I expect it will leave some parents feeling uneasy as they watch.
