I ended up enjoying this more than I anticipated. While I’ve given the games a try, fighting games aren't really my thing (though the Injustice games managed to hold my interest because of their story). The earlier films were enjoyable and didn't try to be overly serious—which was a positive—but they did become excessively theatrical and over-the-top. The most recent animated series took itself far too seriously, resulting in something disappointing and easily forgotten. This film, though, seemed to incorporate the best elements of what came before, featured actors with martial arts experience, included recognizable terms and moves from the games, and benefited from a memorable performance by Josh Lawson as Kano, who delivered humor through a very understated Australian style. Even the music was well done. Considering that it essentially replicates the game—around ten to twelve fights, some impressive finishing moves, and a simple plot lacking in character development—it proved to be an entertaining two hours.
