Those familiar with the Mortal Kombat franchise know attempts to translate its violent, controversial gameplay into live-action have been hit or miss. The initial film from 1995 was reasonably successful, but the 1997 sequel let down viewers who were tired of the PG-13 rating applied to the series. Later efforts, like the 2011 television show, also failed to satisfy fans, particularly as the game itself had become increasingly graphic and brutal. An animated movie in 2020 offered a glimpse of what fans craved with its depiction of violence that many believed was essential for capturing the series' spirit and action. The new "Mortal Kombat" film restarts the movie universe and delivers the intense, brutal, and graphic violence that viewers have been asking for. The story sticks to the basic idea that Outworld has won nine tournaments consecutively, and according to ancient law, another victory would allow them to conquer Earthrealm. Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), the Thunder God responsible for protecting Earth, tries to gather and train a group of fighters to save their world. Of course, Shang Tsung (Chin Han) isn't interested in playing by the rules and sends his best warrior—Sub Zero (Joe Taslim)—to eliminate Earthrealm’s champions before the tournament, blatantly breaking the established guidelines to guarantee victory. What follows is well-executed action with a significant amount of gore and brutality that nearly prevented the film from receiving an R rating. The fight scenes are nicely choreographed, and there were some excellent recreations of signature moves from the game series, which felt purposeful rather than just fan service. Although the plot is relatively straightforward and doesn't stray much from what’s already established, it does expand on the universe’s backstory. It was enjoyable to see numerous references to the franchise, both subtle and obvious, and while some characters were noticeably missing—a surprise—those who did appear were well-cast, leaving room for their return later. The cast might not have any big names that Western audiences typically expect from a major studio film, but they work together effectively and do a good job of portraying their characters. The movie sets up potential sequels and hints at a character whose absence felt like an oversight. Nevertheless, "Mortal Kombat" provides fans with a faithful adaptation that doesn’t shy away from gore and violence, finally giving viewers the cinematic experience they've been hoping for. 3.5 stars out of 5
