My initial impression from the trailer suggested Johnny Cage would be the main focus, likely taking advantage of Karl Urban’s popularity. Despite a predictable structure and some script issues that felt disconnected, it did acknowledge earlier installments—though not directly adapting the video game material. I thought they managed to give roughly equal attention to each character, even if most lacked substantial background details beyond Cage's story. I anticipated performances would be entertaining rather than profound, with the exception of Cage’s portrayal, and that’s what I received. The visual effects were acceptable, although some improvements could have been made. I appreciated their selection of actors; however, Urban seems a little too mature for his role. Instead of casting primarily young, inexperienced performers, they opted for a more seasoned ensemble, which added depth to the characters—though Johnny Cage’s age was noticeable. The fire effects for Liu Kang felt excessive, but thankfully the rest of the film didn't rely heavily on visual spectacle. It ended up being an adequate movie, featuring a somewhat underdeveloped story and acceptable performances, though it proved enjoyable overall. What detracted from it most was a disjointed script that didn’t meaningfully update prior storylines, making things feel unclear at times. What stood out to me positively was the decision to cast older actors instead of a group of young performers who wouldn't have brought any real seriousness to their roles. On the downside, there were a few special effects that fell short, some confusing plot threads, and Cage’s unique abilities weren’t fully explained.
