The fate of "Earthrealm" hangs in the balance; after years of conflict, "Outworld" is on track for its tenth triumph, which would mean dominion over their realm. It's up to defender "Rayden" (Christopher Lambert) to assemble a trio of fighters who might stand a chance against the schemes of his adversary, the sorcerer "Shang Tsung" (Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa). The individuals he chooses aren’t exactly who you’d expect. "Liu Kang" (Robin Shou) and "Sonya Blade" (Bridgette Sampras) are fueled by personal vendettas, while "Johnny Cage" (Linden Ashby), seemingly superficial, is an actor determined to demonstrate his capabilities extend beyond mere acting. Will they manage to overcome the champions of "Outworld" and their internal struggles? The film clocks in at just over 100 minutes, yet it feels considerably longer. The plot crawls along initially, introducing three characters burdened by past grievances, but these individuals lack depth or compelling personalities—and so does their conversation. The fight sequences are monotonous and reveal a surprising absence of creativity, as do the noticeably artificial special effects. Lambert’s presence is limited to brief appearances as the guru in a white suit; Tagawa likely steals the spotlight with his over-the-top portrayal of the villain. The story attempts to merge action, adventure, and mystical elements, but neither the writer nor the director possesses sufficient skill to elevate it beyond a foreseeable, unremarkable martial arts disappointment.
