It shouldn’t have surprised anyone that _Mortal Engines_ didn't quite work out well. The movie attempted to pack an excessive amount of material into its running time, and as a result, it failed to achieve anything worthwhile. I did find myself somewhat engaged by the character of Shrike; however, that was essentially the totality of my positive feelings about _Mortal Engines_. Perhaps if the film had been released roughly eight years earlier, during the peak of the peculiar steampunk craze that swept across the world—even though it was a strange phenomenon where people liberally applied the label "steampunk" to almost anything they liked (and often to themselves), regardless of any genuine connection to actual steampunk—it might have at least succeeded financially. Regardless, this particular iteration of _Mortal Engines_ simply isn't a well-made film. _Final rating:★★ - It had elements that resonated with me, but ultimately it was disappointing._
