This science fiction thriller is well-crafted, even if the central narrative feels quite familiar. It shares elements with movies like 'Splice', 'Uncanny' and 'Ex Machina', though I don’t believe it’s a failure overall. I wasn’t particularly wowed, and many viewers who have seen those other films likely feel similarly, especially regarding the final scene. Despite that, it provides some entertainment, notably when the action sequences begin. A corporate entity dispatches an investigator, Lee, to examine the research facility following a minor incident. The situation quickly deteriorates during an interview, causing mayhem and structural collapse within the lab. Those who manage to survive find themselves unsure of whom to believe, but they resolve to protect their subject. What unfolds subsequently is genuinely surprising, with another unexpected development right before the end credits. The flaw, as it often does in films exploring similar themes, stems from emotional attachment to the research itself. That's a recurring element in these kinds of stories. The question then becomes, what’s the purpose of conducting such tests, especially for those who are doctors or have studied psychology? For the sake of the plot, human emotions and fallibilities were exploited. Science doesn’t typically operate as depicted in this film. Coming from a new director, it features capable actors, with Kate Mara delivering a standout performance during the action portions. I appreciated Anya Taylor-Joy's work in 'The Witch', and she provides another strong portrayal in the lead role here. The brisk pacing made it feel shorter than its actual length, even though the story is essentially straightforward. It’s a film with a limited cast, set within an isolated, clandestine research lab. This isn’t for everyone, but it's acceptable for a single viewing. _5/10_
