It's difficult to give this less than three stars because I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for Jared Leto, and some of the promotional materials suggested he looked quite rugged and appealing. It should be acknowledged that he’s willing to commit to extensive makeup work, as demonstrated in "House of Gucci" and again here. However, once my initial appreciation for his looks faded, I was left with a feeling similar to watching “Dracula Untold,” minus Charles Dance, combined with echoes of the 1931 version of "Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." The film certainly has a polished visual style; that’s what Marvel/Columbia should be delivering anyway. My main issue is with the narrative itself—it's incredibly flimsy. Matt Smith tends to be somewhat bland in his roles, and when paired with Adria Arjona’s rather forgettable performance as Leto’s associate, "Dr. Bancroft," along with a few brief appearances from Harris, it all feels like an extravagant pilot episode for a TV drama that would likely have trouble getting picked up. I enjoy this type of story, but the feeling I got was one of emptiness and scraping by. Ultimately, Mr. Leto reminds me of Eric Bana—pleasant to look at, but not quite strong enough to hold a movie together.
