As her mother’s health deteriorates, "Loretta" (Cher) consents to marrying the gentle but unremarkable "Johnny" (Danny Aiello), only to discover herself caught up in a family dispute. He refuses to extend an invitation to his brother "Ronny" (Nicolas Cage) for the wedding. She resolves to resolve this immature behavior and goes to speak with him. It turns out he has justifiable reasons for their estrangement, but she is set on bringing them back together. He quickly develops feelings for his future relative, and a complex romance unfolds—helped along by Puccini's "La Boheme" at the Metropolitan Opera—leading her to experience genuine uncertainty, much to the annoyance of her mother "Rose" (Olympia Dukakis). The story that follows is a lightly humorous account of growing affection, familial disagreements, and a noticeable amount of desire. Will they be able to resolve their situation without upsetting "Johnny," or triggering a heart attack in her increasingly bewildered father "Cosmo" (Vincent Gardenia)? There's considerable attraction between Cher and Cage as his appeal and character affect her, leaving them both quite smitten! Norman Jewison lets his supporting actors shine; Dukakis delivers a strong performance, and the script includes some rather expected humor that creates an elegant and captivating love story, developing smoothly like a well-prepared stew. Dean Martin also makes a welcome appearance.
