I'm not sure you could actually fly from the Yukon to the British coast in fifteen minutes, but that’s how this film kicks off with Roger Moore, and it feels like a sign of the flimsy plot and careless production trying to cash in on the popularity of "Star Wars" (1977). A space shuttle gets stolen, and “007” is dispatched to meet with wealthy industrialist "Drax" (Michael Londsale), who resides in what appears to be an authentic French chateau located in California. What follows is disorienting, introducing him to "Dr. Goodhead" (Lois Chiles), and before long they are working together, after a bumpy start, to figure out what happened to the missing spaceship and stop a clever scheme to replace everyone on Earth with a race of people who fit an Aryan ideal. The actors seem unenthusiastic. Lonsdale does his best to create some sense of threat, but otherwise it progresses in a series of disconnected events punctuated by a few big action sequences that are often undermined by substandard special effects – like the dogs eating steaks or the gondola chase, which seems sped up. John Barry and Hal David gave Shirley Bassey another song, and the music does provide some humor with references to "Close Encounters" (1977) and “The Magnificent Seven” (1960), but overall it’s just average. Typically in a “Bond” movie there are moments where he improbably avoids certain death, but here he seems to constantly move from one bad situation to another – with the returning "Jaws" (Richard Kiel) not really managing to be intimidating as things head into space for our bright, but rather absurd, conclusion. The series is losing its appeal and needs a complete overhaul.
