It’s frustrating how often music documentaries are bogged down by unnecessary commentary that interrupts the actual music. That isn't the case here, though. From the very beginning, Brett Morgan establishes that this film focuses on David Bowie himself, rather than those offering their opinions about him. His style, his imagination, his imperfections, his personality, and his artistry are all shown in an engaging way through what’s visible and audible. Often, it's Bowie’s own voice providing the narration; skillful audio editing lets his songs be presented using various recordings of his performances – on stage, on video, or on vinyl – which showcases not only his talent but also that of the musicians and others who supported and influenced him. The film is a tribute to archives everywhere for their generous contributions in allowing us all to appreciate this man’s work, carefully saved over many years. I don't feel compelled to write much more praise because it isn’t something I usually do, and I wouldn’t describe myself as a devoted David Bowie fan—but as an immersive cinematic experience, this surpasses any other documentary of its kind that I can recall. Experiencing it on a large screen with powerful sound is essential for maximum enjoyment, and it's definitely worth seeing.
