Sam Rockwell delivers an impressive performance portraying the only person stationed at a lunar facility. Nearing the conclusion of his three-year assignment, his character experiences the consequences of prolonged solitude. With just “GERTY,” an automated assistant voiced by Kevin Spacey, to keep him company, he yearns for a return home to his wife and daughter and a more conventional existence. His task involves collecting Helium-3—a source of clean energy—and sending it back to Earth; however, an incident involving one of the harvesting machines leads to him waking up in the infirmary. “GERTY” insists that everything is fine, but as he recovers, he grows suspicious about what really occurred. He wonders how he was returned and what transpired. Despite being reassured by his caretaker, he goes back to the silo and uncovers something quite unexpected. Is he imagining things? This experience prompts him to question his identity, the purpose of his mission, and most significantly, his prospects for the future—does he even have one, or a history to look back on? Rockwell powerfully conveys the growing sense of oppressive isolation combined with mounting bewilderment and frustration. He begins to feel apprehension, but about what exactly? The story gains impact from this gradual disappearance of anything concrete, whether it's physical or mental, and the seemingly benevolent voice emanating from the walls—ostensibly there to protect him—becomes increasingly threatening as the narrative progresses. It’s a worthwhile viewing experience for those who appreciate science fiction with more intellectual depth.
