The film includes a bizarre sequence where the unclothed "Colin" (Romain Duris) accepts payment before being positioned on a large mound of mud to insulate snails and assist their reproduction! This might offer some insight into the surreal nature of this comedic drama. He’s a man of means, sporting white leather brogues that seem almost alive. His home is a lavishly renovated railway carriage shared with his assistant "Nicolas" (Omar Sy) and a new girlfriend, "Chloé" (Audrey Tautou), who suffers from an unusual illness affecting her lungs and a flower. Determined to find a way to save her, he learns that keeping her constantly surrounded by fresh flowers is the only option—and so, guided by the teachings of his mentor "Jean-Sol Partre," he embarks on some peculiar journeys involving animated devices and contraptions, some possessing human or animal qualities that would have felt right at home in "City of Lost Children" (1995). While I hadn’t read Boris Vian's original novel, I did appreciate this captivating adaptation from Michel Gondry. The rapport between Duris and Tautou is pleasant to observe as the narrative progresses at its own leisurely pace—not adhering to any conventional structure. The distinctive score by Étienne Charry significantly enhances the experience, and it’s clear a great deal of consideration went into creating such an eccentric and disorganized aesthetic. I prioritized the characters over the plot itself, and as someone who generally appreciates Duris' performances, I wasn’t let down. It won’t appeal to all tastes, but I found myself enjoying (most of) it.
