My experience with this foray into Monty Python’s peculiar world turned out to be brief, and while there are certainly a few amusing parts, I found myself largely underwhelmed by their take on the Arthurian legends. The film begins with Graham Chapman portraying King Arthur wandering through England in search of capable knights for his round table. Once he has assembled his team, they receive divine instruction to embark on a sacred mission – locating the Holy Grail. Then it’s up to Cleese, Idle and Gilliam to don armor and hunt for the grail within a kingdom full of suggestive humor. The journey includes encounters with the Black Knight, a castle populated by women eager for romance, several monks, and essentially every archetype you'd anticipate from medieval times, culminating in an irritating final scene involving the "Knights of Ni," who simply desire a small garden or two. Perhaps it’s not entirely reasonable to judge this film through a modern lens, especially considering more than fifty years have passed since its release; however, as my initial viewing, I couldn't help but wonder why authorities weren't involved sooner. The jokes aren't universally successful—some definitely don’t land—but the biggest issue is how much they stretch out each gag. It feels like a thirty-minute television program that was artificially extended by an additional hour. A more concise version would have been preferable. There are a few memorable appearances, such as Carol Cleveland’s “Zoot” and Connie Booth's witch, but otherwise I felt like I had fallen prey to some rather old-fashioned promotion. It wasn’t awful, but honestly – what was all the excitement about?
