I consider this film to be the greatest tribute to Kurasawa’s *Rashomon* that I have encountered. While others have attempted a similar approach—perhaps influenced by the bonsai rule of three—the results have always felt underwhelming. However, this film, Kore-Eda's work? Even Kurasawa himself would likely applaud it. It elevates the master’s technique to an entirely new plane. Yuji Sakamoto and Kore-Eda have produced what I believe is a flawless movie. The narrative moves along smoothly, with a superb rhythm, and possesses a depth and intricacy akin to a sophisticated wine. Kore-Eda disregarded conventional filmmaking practices and delivered two hours of direct, intimate storytelling. Remarkably, it proves very effective here. And Ryuichi Sakamoto’s score? Perhaps this is the moment to contemplate life beyond death; it's an exceptional accompaniment to Kore-Eda’s vision.
