I’m struggling to find the right words about this one; it wasn’t awful, but it could have been so much better. The actress who plays Resident Evil is consistently a strong action performer—I consider her on par with Bruce Willis or Jason Statham. She brought the same energy and excitement to this film as she does in her other roles. The plot, like the production budget, wasn’t particularly complex. If a substantial amount of money was invested in this movie, I don't believe it lived up to what producers or fans were hoping for. It wasn’t a bad film, but it didn’t exactly grip me either. The fight scene between her and the character who becomes her friend felt a little forced. To my thinking, he was operating in his element—he’s an experienced hunter while she's not portrayed as an elite soldier. So, even though their battle was well-choreographed, I had trouble accepting that she could keep pace with him; it seemed like movie magic or just something written into the script. The special effects were decent given what they were and the actors did a fine job acting. I don't think the lead actress spent enough time engaging with the Monster Hunter world. I understand they were in a remote location, but having her travel through a town or marketplace to find an object that would help her return home might have made it more immersive for viewers. Instead, simply dressing her in Monster Hunter armor and showing her on their sand-ship felt like what it was—low budget or hastily produced. The conclusion was acceptable as well. I appreciated the dragon destroying a modern airplane, and I was impressed that they were able to film the action sequences during daylight hours while still maintaining believability. If there’s another installment, I hope they lean into a more Conan-like feel—more of the Monster Hunter world and its people. The movie isn't bad, but I won’t be rushing out to buy it or searching for it online. It would be fine for watching on a streaming service while relaxing.
