You might think I wouldn’t be the sort of person who would enjoy this movie, and you'd probably be right. Daniel doesn’t really have a good time. He writes lengthy praises about films like 'Roma,' which begins with five minutes of someone cleaning up after a dog, or 'A Hidden Life', which is mostly beautiful scenery for sixty percent of its running time. But I can still enjoy myself! I liked 'The Meg'! I was completely thrilled by the first Transformers film! When Dwayne Johnson rode a tsunami and narrowly avoided an oil tanker that then destroyed the Golden Gate Bridge in 'San Andreas,' I jumped up in the cinema and applauded! This movie, though? It's not enjoyable. It’s too noisy, too difficult to understand, too crazy to be appealing, and not nearly crazy enough to be funny or charming. The film essentially shouts at you for ninety minutes in a really aggressive, hyper-masculine style, leaving you feeling like you were stuck next to someone at a party for three hours while they explained their screenplay—the one that will finally, finally adapt a video game well—and never picking up on the fact that you want a drink or to use the restroom or to change the subject or just escape. I went into Paul W. S. Anderson’s latest film (the director of 'Mortal Combat' and 'Death Race', not 'Boogie Nights' and 'Punch-Drunk Love') expecting to have a great time, but it didn’t give me any opportunity to do so. And then this ridiculous movie that doesn’t seem to know whether it wants to be a bad ‘Godzilla’ or a terrible reimagining of 'The Dark Tower' has the nerve to plan for a sequel! (But hey, we live in the End Times, so it makes sense that we would get another installment of this mess instead of another season of 'Mindhunter'). I’m sure some people will find entertainment in this story about Artemis (Hunter, of Monsters, the main character) fighting giant spiders and being the savior white woman to a much more interesting person of color while crying over a ring (it was for “forever,” remember). For me? The whole thing is too loud, aggressive, and boring to be good mindless fun.
