Charlize Theron delivers a believable performance as Aileen Wuornos, portraying this real person's descent from sex worker to serial killer in 1980s Florida. Her profession places her in contact with unpleasant individuals who might offer money or violence. Following one particularly negative experience, she ends up at a gay bar and meets Selby (Christina Ricci). Initially distrustful of her new acquaintance’s intentions, she soon becomes driven to improve her situation and support them both financially. It's then that she realizes she can lure men seeking sexual gratification and, instead of fulfilling their desires, shoot them with six bullets while taking their money. While undeniably disturbed, she doesn’t seem inherently malicious; occasionally, she even feels compassion for those she victimizes. However, her actions inevitably draw the attention of law enforcement and threaten her already fragile connection with Selby. We know from historical accounts how events unfolded, but despite being unable to justify her acts of revenge, Theron still manages to give this woman a feeling of enduring integrity. The actual Wuornos had evidently suffered abuse and hardship since adolescence, constantly needing to adapt and survive, and that is effectively conveyed through strong writing and the fierce determination displayed by both women, who have always faced their own struggles. It offers a stark view of a society where sex is treated as a product and its consumers are barely distinguishable from beasts, and at times the narrative can be challenging to witness. The conclusion feels somewhat abbreviated and hurried, but overall it maintains a convincing sense of realism and humanity.
