The film drops us directly into a hilltop bunker where eight young men, varying in age from almost boys to just past adolescence, are guarding two captives: an American doctor, Julianne Nicholson, and a cow. Despite their arsenal of firearms, knives, and explosives, these men understand that the animal needs regular milking or else it will cause serious trouble, so they’re instructed by their small leader, called the “Messenger,” Wilson Salazar, to be especially careful with her. However, they have alcohol and are feeling good, and after some thoughtless shooting, they lose one of their prisoners, along with Wolf, Julián Giraldo, who was their leader and kept things under control. They also receive new instructions from headquarters to relocate the doctor, but she gets away! Now they must evade their superiors while searching for her and reaching their new destination without any more problems. What are the odds? Pretty slim, actually, but their journey blends playful antics with a sense of inspired rebellion that could easily fit into the harsh landscape of a Latin American dictatorship. They function as a group, though not blindly—Smurf can attest to that—because their commitment and loyalty to the cause outweigh almost everything else as they make their way through the jungle, navigate dangerous rapids, and dodge constant attacks from approaching government troops. I haven’t encountered a story about the futility of war told from the viewpoint of young people quite like this since “Lord of the Flies.” They aren't passive observers or refugees; instead, they are active participants who have embraced the ideology and training and believe that they’re prepared to die if necessary. The cinematography effectively combines sweeping mountain views with close-up, personal moments, there’s a bit of humor sprinkled throughout, and the acting is generally quite good, showcasing a strong sense of camaraderie. It moves along briskly and is well worth an hour and a half of your time.
