The young macaw, "Blu," experiences an early fall from his nest, landing in the care of some bird thieves. Soon after another mishap, he finds himself living a sheltered and ground-bound existence with “Linda,” enjoying mochas at Barnes & Noble and under the impression that he’s the final member of his kind. Then “Tulio” arrives from Rio de Janeiro, suggesting there might be a possible mate for "Blu." Perhaps "Jewel" could help them reproduce, so they set off to meet her. Could romantic success be in store? Sadly not, as the pair are snatched from their enclosure by animal smugglers and hidden away, bound together, into a favela under the watchful eye of the threatening “Nigel.” As carnival approaches, “Linda” and “Tulio” must attempt to locate their missing birds while "Blu" and "Jewel" try to break free from their kidnappers. The film begins with some amusingly staged and colorful jungle scenes that offer a spirited performance, but afterward it settles into a rather familiar sequence of one problem after another, accompanied by fairly forgettable songs that embrace the Hispanic feel without sticking in your head. It’s visually appealing and full of energy, and I did enjoy the villainous “Nigel,” but ultimately there's nothing fresh here, and it’s not something I anticipate remembering. Best suited for children watching at home, I would guess.
