The Marx brothers manage to sneak onto a cruise ship inside barrels, and then they create some trouble before successfully evading immigration authorities when they arrive in New York. Soon after, they get caught up in a conflict between different groups of gangsters, which involves the kidnapping of one brother’s daughter—and it looks like these not-so-serious comedians might be the ones to rescue her. I'll admit that this style of comedy isn’t really my cup of tea; I don't typically find it amusing. However, you have to appreciate how well they perform. The rapid rhythm and carefully arranged "improvisation" are remarkably precise and quite something to see. Each of the four brothers—though perhaps Zeppo doesn't stand out as much—brings a distinct personality to their roles, and Harpo even plays the harp with some ability. It’s that very precision which makes it feel lifeless to me; it feels like a comedic dance where everything is carefully arranged and carried out. The humor—which falls flat just as often as it succeeds—feels almost beside the point compared to their skill in presenting it, and I didn't connect with that either. Wild? Possibly... Funny? Not really.
