Trace Lysette delivers a noteworthy performance as Monica, the central figure who returns home to support her mother, Eugenia, portrayed by Patricia Clarkson, as she faces a terminal illness. Having lived for over two decades apart, Monica, a trans woman, finds that reintegration into her family requires significant adaptation from everyone involved. The looming reality of Eugenia's death adds considerable weight to the story, offering fresh insights and reevaluating what’s truly important. As the plot unfolds, it becomes apparent that the reasons for their separation are more complex than initially assumed, revealing decades of trauma impacting each member of the family. It's also evident from early on that Monica struggles with self-worth, and her frequent mentions of a friend named Jimmy—who remains unseen—raises questions about his existence or whether he serves as a refuge for her inner life; I suspect it’s likely both. However, the film is significantly hampered by its sluggish rhythm and uneven writing quality. While intentionally paced slowly, this wouldn't have been problematic if the dialogue felt more purposeful and impactful. Instead, the story progresses in an almost dreamlike manner. Despite this, there are moments of genuine emotional resonance, particularly in the scenes between mother and daughter, and between siblings (Joshua Close), which evoke strong feelings. Though fundamentally a narrative about acceptance—extending beyond just Monica’s identity—it explores a family confronting past missteps and hasty choices that, with more confident direction, could have resulted in a far stronger final product.
