This unusual drama about sex work features three noteworthy performances centered on the character of "Fei" (Kai Ko). He's left his village to find employment in town and send money home to his mother. As the film’s name indicates, he discovers an unconventional way to do this, which creates problems with his family. Despite a few run-ins with law enforcement, things are generally going well for this good-looking young man until "Long" (Yufan Bai), a naive individual eager to join this profession and also quite fond of “Fei,” enters the picture. We’re then introduced to "Xiaolai" (J.C. Lin), who shares a complicated, unresolved history with “Fei.” Now facing difficult decisions, it's up to “Fei” to manage his intricate web of relationships while minimizing any negative consequences. The film unfolds deliberately over its two-hour length, but the final thirty minutes bring all the storylines together in a touching way as the young man confronts his sexuality and the repression that has defined it so far. His childhood friend, now married, also faces their own difficult situation, and there's vulnerable “Long,” who may be experiencing something similar to what "Fei" went through when he was younger and more desperate. While the sex industry forms the setting, it doesn’t dominate or even feature prominently in how the characters are portrayed. Some clients seem to genuinely connect with “Fei,” but ultimately the film examines his own difficulty forming lasting relationships. Is he truly seeking a full life, or is he hiding behind online anonymity and casual encounters? Certain scenes between "Fei" and "Long" are emotionally charged, written with a purposeful restraint that allows the actors to convey their affection subtly. It’s a love story of sorts, but will anyone find contentment?
